The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
